No Excuses: “I don’t want to be a professional…”
WELL YOU SHOULD! EVERYONE SHOULD! YOU’RE STUPID IF YOU DON’T WANT TO BE!
haha oh man, can you imagine if that was really my response? All of you would stop following me immediately….
Seriously though the question isn’t “Do you want to be a full time, professional comic creator?” The question is “Do you want to make comics?” If your answer is yes, then the fact you don’t want to be a professional is irrelevant.
This is a tough excuse, because it boarders on the only legitimate excuse out there. If you have been reading this for a while you know what it is. If you’re new, the only legitimate excuse is “I don’t want to.” And really that’s not an excuse as much as a reason. It’s the reason I don’t play basketball or practice medicine. I just don’t want to do it. I never will either and I’m okay with that because I won’t be achieving a goal that I don’t have… so it sort of works out. The difference is, this excuse was told to me by someone who didn’t want to make comics their job, but they still wanted to make them. So this brings it back into my territory.
I can understand the fact you don’t want to make comics your living, and how that might prevent you from working on something. What motivation do you have to work on it? It is ALOT of work, and it won’t pay ANY of your bills. It’s very easy to put it off and excuse your laziness on the fact you don’t want to be a pro. However, if it’s something you WANT to do, nothing should stop you. Especially if its something you enjoy.
When I was in college (and a little after) I was in a band. We were not very good, but we had alot of fun. No one in the band really wanted to be professional musicians, (at least not a professional musician with THIS band.) But that didn’t stop us from meeting up every week, writing songs, practicing, and playing at bars. It was alot of hard work, but I loved it. And even though I didn’t want to be a pro musician, it didn’t stop me from doing something fun that I wanted to do, and put the hard work into it.
It’s the same thing with you and comics.
Sure you don’t have a deadline. Sure you’re not going to make any money. Sure it’s alot of hard work with no initial rewards. Sure you don’t want to be a pro. But is that a good reason to do nothing at all? Definitely not. Especially if its something you want to do. Plus who knows, maybe your comic becomes a smash hit on the web, and by no fault of your own you’ll become a professional web comic artist. Would that be so bad? Well there’s no way to know until you actually get that comic made.
I guess the bottom line is: For fun, or professionally, there is no excuse to not do the things you want to do.
So stop making Excuses, and Make some comics!
